The light-rabbit
There are books that entertain. And there are books that change you from within. This is one of the latter, because it moves you and makes you think.
The Light-Rabbit is a book about true friendship, love of nature, and the small things that make life great. A story that teaches children to look, listen, and be present, and that reminds adults of what we sometimes forget. It is a beautiful gift for learning to be more aware of the world around us and to appreciate its wonders. It helps make good decisions and find happiness.
A poetic, spiritual, emotional, and tender story that connects with readers of all ages. Recommended age: 5 to 120 years — and that is no exaggeration. Written in simple language, short sentences, and large type, yet filled with messages of wisdom, this book speaks to the heart of readers of any age. It brings to mind the spirit of The Little Prince.
Olga is ten years old when she meets a light-rabbit. Their friendship transforms everything: the way she sees, the way she listens, the way she feels time, the way she is in the world. Together they discover things that matter: talking while truly being side by side, marveling at how flowers open and leaves grow, listening even to silence, discovering the stars… A time that cannot be measured in minutes, but that will stay with Olga forever.
The illustrations by Begoña Monge Moreno —more than 40 of them— accompany the story with delicacy and colour, creating images that children will want to come back to again and again.
It is the perfect read to share as a family, to give as a gift, or to read in the classroom as the starting point for a conversation about what truly matters.
What is The light-rabbit about?
The Light-Rabbit tells the story of the friendship between a girl, Olga, and a light-rabbit. It overflows with tenderness and love. It deals with very important things — things that help us know ourselves and the world around us, things that help us build a good life and find happiness in living.
One June day, Olga, a ten-year-old girl, met Sunny, a light-rabbit, and from that moment her world changed — it became more beautiful.
Together they did important things: talking while truly being beside each other; watching clouds cross the blue sky, appearing, shifting shape, and fading into the horizon; marveling at how flowers open and leaves grow, at how ants cooperate in their daily existence; discovering how stars hide in the infinite mists of the universe…
The time they shared was not time that can be measured in minutes. It will stay with Olga forever. «As long as you don’t forget me, you won’t lose me,» Sunny once told her.
Across its 29 chapters, Olga and the rabbit explore together:
- Identity and the value of being unique.
- The beauty of paying attention and living in the present.
- Shared time and the friendship that transforms.
- Love for nature and the responsibility to care for it.
- Empathy, conscious listening and cooperation.
- The importance of small things.
- The value of what we do, because what we do makes us who we are.
- Loss, memory and the love that remains.
- Making decisions with awareness and courage.
- How to do things with love.
- Living with enthusiasm, building a life with love.
- Choosing to live with love and courage.
A book that teaches us to see the invisible, to listen to the wind, to feel the trees, and to remember that we too are made of dreams and love. Deeply meaningful for children — and for the adults who accompany them.
This book does you good.
The Main Characters
The two main characters are Sunny, the light-rabbit, and Olga.
Sunny: is a light-rabbit, gentle, endearing, cheerful, wise, and slightly mysterious. He has white fur that shines as though made of light, golden eyes like small warm suns, and a violet-colored nose, inner ears, and whiskers. He appears suddenly in the life of the young girl Olga and changes her world. He peeks his little head out from between the branches of a bush, leaps toward Olga, and nothing is ever the same again.
What does Sunny like to do? He loves to hop, jump, run, and chat with his friends; to watch a new day dawn over the meadow; to see how flowers and plants are washed by drops of dew and begin to drink from the cool water. Sunny loves the company of the girl Olga — talking with her about important things, hearing her call his name, tickling her with his violet whiskers, letting himself be cradled in her arms. He also loves playing tag with ladybugs, competing with grasshoppers to see who can jump the highest, and admiring butterflies. Sunny savors every moment intensely. He sees beyond the visible. He loves life. He gives importance to small things, because he believes that life is made of those small everyday things. He is very special, unique, and singular — just as the girl Olga, his dear friend, is too.
Olga: is a ten-year-old girl going through a somewhat difficult time. She broke her leg while skating with friends, and her parents, who had to keep working, brought her to stay in the village with her grandparents Eduardo and María. Near the grandparents’ house was a meadow full of flowers. That is where Olga would go to sit in the sun, spend time thinking, dreaming, and watching the clouds. They came in different shapes and sizes, white, grey, and dark. Olga loved the way they drifted across the blue sky, the way they joined together to form shapes that transformed into others as they broke apart, only to disappear somewhere along the horizon.
It was in that meadow that she met Sunny, the light-rabbit.
Sunny’s World
Sunny’s world is beautiful. He looks at things with his sun-like eyes and lights them up with his brightness, his goodness, and his truth.
Our little rabbit greets each day with enthusiasm and curiosity. What adventures await him? Sunny talks with the flowers, the birds, and the small creatures that live nearby. He hops, runs, plays, and laughs with his silver-bell laugh, and he does it all with joy and love of life. Everything around him glows with his light.
Sunny can see the invisible and read the messages carried to him by the wind. Our light-rabbit loves Nature and cares for it well. He believes that life is made of small things, and for that reason they matter.
In Sunny’s world there is the girl Olga. They love each other. The light-rabbit teaches Olga to look more carefully, to listen truly, to know the world we live in better, and to do things with love, like picking flowers for someone or cleaning a stream, knowing that what you do matters to others. He helps her know herself and understand that what we do, in turn, shapes who we are.
Sunny’s world most certainly has a different color, a special light. It is a world full of goodness, truth, and beauty. In it, discoveries never stop. Sunny shares his world with the girl Olga and teaches her to live with enthusiasm and love, embracing life.
A Story Written by Mother and Son
The light-rabbit is the fruit of a very special collaboration: that of Anna Arnaiz Kompanietz and her son Alejo Nieto Arnaiz. It was written in an intimate space of love and shared creation, and this shows on every page. It is not a manufactured story — it is a lived one. Their time together was spent talking about things that, in the usual hurried pace of daily life, tend to slip by unnoticed, yet are important for preparing children to be happy. It is like a dreamed conversation between a mother and son about the things one would wish to pass on and teach. And so The light-rabbit lends itself beautifully to sparking conversations between parents and children in a warm and connected moment.
Who is it for?
Although recommended from age 5, The light-rabbit is one of those books that adults end up reading on their own. Its messages about love for life, self-discovery and self-respect, the value of friendship and making choices that help you be happy resonate just as much in a first-year primary school child as in a parent reading aloud at bedtime. They invite meaningful conversations with children about things that truly matter.
It is the perfect gift for:
- Children aged 5 to 10.
- Families with an interest in emotional education.
- Teachers in Early Years and Primary Education.
- Anyone who enjoys stories with depth and beauty.
